DIDO & AENEAS: Concept Design
Opera by Henry Purcell
Must be to storm her lover on the ocean.
From the ruin of others, our pleasures we
borrow
- the sorceress
Dido and Aeneas are envisioned as a visual reflection on the opposing forces of flame and sea, warmth and destiny, stillness and motion. Dido is portrayed as a single candle burning at the edge of an infinite horizon. She is grounded in earth and devotion, but Aeneas is seduced by the wind and water, by forces greater than love. Their worlds intersect but never meld.
In the final scene, we are left with the afterglow of a burned-down candle and an uninterrupted horizon, a reminder that some loves are not meant to endure, but rather to underscore the impossibility of preserving both devotion and duty simultaneously.
